2011 AACD Youth Conservation Workshop

Youth Conservation Workshop
June 26 - July 1, 2011
Camp Clearfork, Mt. Ida

It is time to contact the schools/organizations in your district/county for prospective students to attend the 2011 AACD Youth Conservation Workshop.

The Youth Conservation Workshop will begin on Sunday, June 26 and conclude Friday, July 1, 2011. The workshop will be headquartered at Camp Clearfork Campgrounds near Mt. Ida, West of Hot Springs, AR.

Due in part to a generous grant from The Arkansas Natural Resource Commission the cost to attend the camp will be $75.00 per student. This fee will be paid for by the County Conservation District. There is a maximum accommodation of 50 campers for the 2011 session. This will be a first come/first serve basis. Participants will be selected based on the following; age, academic year and the date application is received. Multiple participants from the same district/county will only be considered if the camp has not reached capacity. Important, any high school student going into grades 9th-12th is eligible to apply. Any returning students will not be accepted unless camp has not reached capacity. Returning students are not eligible to qualify for the scholarships or laptop.

A $25.00 refundable fee will be requested from the student attending. Once the student has attended camp, the district will return the fee. If the student does not attend camp, the district may keep or return the fee to their discretion. The District Office will be notified if their sponsored student does not attend camp. It is recommended that the District contact the accepted student prior to camp to make sure that he plans to attend. An alternate may fill in once approved by the District and YCW Coordinators. It is also suggested that once a student attends camp, they are invited to attend the next board meeting with a quick discussion of their activities and conservation education learned while attending camp.

Another exciting aspect to mention to prospective workshop participants is the possibility of winning a $500 scholarship or laptop. The scholarships are sponsored by the AACD and the Razorback Chapter of Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Society. The AACD scholarships is named in honor of Shane Stauffer, a past youth counselor.

Enclosed with this memo is the Application Form, which consists of the Medical Form, Release of Liability, Conservation District Checklist, Rules and Participation Guidelines Form and a "What to Bring” list. Each student should complete the forms and have them signed by the parent or guardian. This is required in order to participate. The signed forms must be returned no later than May 6, 2011 to Attention: Brandy Gardner, 505 Brooks Ave, Harrisburg, AR 72432. Faxed copies will not be accepted. The deadline for the application fee to be returned to a district will be May 13, 2011.

The Coordinators for the Youth Conservation Workshop are Brandy Gardner (Poinsett County) 870-578-2444 ext.3 or Carolyn Holcomb (Jackson County) 870-523-8986 ext.3 or Cindy Thornberry (Madison County) 501-234-2011. Please contact one of them if you have questions regarding the workshop.
